WATER SPEAKS ABOUT US
TW AQUA 2023
FESTIVAL FOR WATER
Island of SALINA / Aeolian Islands
8-10 SEPTEMBER 2023
Water reveals a symbiotic way of relating between human beings and nature, an evolving and transformative dialogue.
Water, the smallest molecule found in Nature, is essential for our existence, and from here begins its story and our relationship with it.
As water changes, so does nature, where plowed fields replace wild forests, canals distribute water to those who produce and consume, mediating the relationship between humans and water. Passageways shift, water quality and availability evolve, and societies reorganize to respond to new needs, dangers, and opportunities.
In the many ways societies and individuals manage and relate to water, different manifestations and dimensions of human relationships can be observed.
Civilizations have developed along the coasts of seas and rivers, growing with agriculture and trade; as they expanded around and through these waters, people adapted the landscape to meet new needs.

Water tells endless stories of possibilities and diversity.
Water tells stories of peoples, cultures, spirituality, and solidarity, but also of prejudice, power, and rights granted and denied.
Everywhere in the world, water is part of daily life: the water that heals, that is drunk, that is used for hygiene and pleasure, that creates and destroys, the water that provides food and floods, devastates, especially when threatened.
WATER and its meanings: TW collects every meaning that water holds for us, enhancing and transforming our thoughts where water creates beauty and dialogue.

AQUA 2022
festival for water
The AQUA Festival is set to return to the picturesque island of Salina, bringing together artists, experts, and the local community to explore and celebrate the essential value of water. This year’s edition will feature a dynamic program of events, fostering a necessary dialogue on water conservation, sustainability, and its cultural significance.
AQUA is more than a festival; it is a movement that aims to raise awareness of the importance of water through art, science, and community engagement. The event will host renowned artists whose works reflect the profound relationship between humans and water, as well as scientists and environmental experts who will share insights on water-related challenges and solutions.
One of the festival’s highlights is the involvement of local schools, allowing students to engage directly with experts and artists. Through interactive workshops and discussions, young minds will be encouraged to reflect on their role in water preservation and environmental stewardship.
The artistic programs of TW, directed and coordinated by Christina Sassayannis and Paolo Altieri in project execution and design, involve experienced professionals from the Archive of Memory with Sergio Pelliccioni and Milena Iaffaldano as partners in the proposed educational programs. These initiatives align with the festival's objectives of raising awareness and fostering discussions on water and marine conservation.
After nearly ten years on the island of Salina, TW launched the AQUA Festival, with its first edition in 2022. AQUA 2022 was conceived to promote water and its uses, creating spaces for sharing and dialogue. The festival's core mission is to highlight and raise awareness of the importance and preciousness of water.
A digital storytelling workshop engaged students and local residents in the entire creative process, from concept development to audiovisual post-production.
One of the standout performances was The Image of Water by Marcela Szurkalo, an interdisciplinary piece where the artist interacted with the location and its connection to water, exploring Mediterranean traditions. The performance, curated by Alice Penconi with video effects by Mattia Mariani, reflected on cultural identities born around water.
Additionally, the festival presented the Almoraima group, which premiered Desertsong, featuring fifteen original compositions blending Arab-Andalusian sounds with Mediterranean musical traditions. This unique project brought together musicians Massimiliano Almoraima (oud), Saleem Anichini (viola and violin), Giovanni Ceresoli (flamenco guitar), and Matteo Resta (electric bass).
Complementing the festival’s artistic landscape was the Drawing Cloud installation, showcasing drawings created by schoolchildren, alongside an international photography exhibition highlighting the theme of water. In collaboration with ARCHIVIO DELLA MEMORIA, children from Salina’s schools created drawings and stories, further enriching the festival’s educational outreach.

IX incontro e mostra artistica internazionale Through Waters

The event will be open until the 31th October 2015 free entrance and want to aware the relation between man and environment as a dialogue of reciprocity.
We cannot be separate from water, we are water. This why we bring into this event AquaBoll. We want to promote water intended as an element that supports and holds in all life.
Water surrounds us before we were born, in and out of our bodies every day, we welcomes the deep blue sea. We are water. Observe and become in touch with water its means first of all take care of ourselves, and protect this precious element.
AquaBoll is an interactive video installation developed by Paolo Scoppola for Through Waters.
AQUABOLL
A big screen welcomes the audience with background music. As soon as someone approaches, AquaBoll start drawing the outlines of the audience, in a continuous overlapping forms. The colors are taken from seawater and alternating with white lines reminiscent of the surf. It 'a continuous floating in colors and shapes that evoke the natural relationship between man and water. The gestures of the spectators are then accompanied by the sound of the waves, the intensity of which depends upon the movements, giving the illusion that these trails of color are precisely the waves of the sea.
The sound, the colors, its unpredictability, its poetry and its reality to live with and protect, WATER.
“ Water is element of life. Water is matrix, mother and medium. There is no life without water.”
With the collaboration of UNESCO , Civiltà dell'Acqua, Comune di Venezia and Vela, Through waters will be in Venice, the city of water. We offer to the citizens and visitors the occasion of an interesting journey through art documentaries screening and workshop with children.

On June the 4th Through Waters Art & Water keeping desert aside photo exhibit has been opened at the Art Kino Kriterion in Sarajevo.
The event was in the framework of the "World Environment Day" (WED): three days of activities coordinated by the United Nations Environment Program.
UNEP chose Through Waters as link project between the general environment protection issue and the specific thematic umbrella "Think, Eat and Share" under which the three days WED activities were reassembled. Water and food production are intimated related. Wasting food means wasting fresh water resource.
Considering this key concept the opening event has been organized in collaboration with a local NGO, Alterural, who provided products coming from Sarajevo surroundings. A "Tasty Water Cocktail" has welcome our guests. They could enjoy fresh fruits and drink rose, blueberry, strawberry or elder flavored water in a joyful atmosphere.
The Through Waters photos collection, that is nowadays traveling around China's majors towns, has been enrich with some other pictures taken in Bosnia and Herzegovina. BiH is a country extremely rich on water resources, but suffering on insufficient infrastructure system. Reducing water pollution and improve water and waste management are the key environmental priorities to walk up to the sustainable socioeconomic development of the region. The showed benefits and problems resulting from a reasonable or an unsustainable use of the resource have naturally brought Through Water audiences to think about water as local and global issue who need an integrated and cooperative action to be respected and developed in its multiple functions. Some of the pictures showed water not only as vital resource, but also as a playful occasion able to make you enjoy important moments of life. Water touches everybody, water doesn't know what a political, religious or cultural frontier is.
French, Swiss, Italian and Turkish Embassies attended the opening event and Through Waters has received the strong support from the UNEP team coming from Vienna. To stress the importance of our environment protection a group of cycling women arrived at the event just after the WED bike event organized to promote healthy habits.
During all the exhibit time children from BiH and from different countries have had the occasion to play and draw their ideas related to water...pirates boats and colorful fishes and flowers have been hung to the ceiling with blue, green, red and yellow strings adding a nice light on the exhibit "children corner".
Through Waters exhibit is at the Kriterion until June the 13th 2013.
World Water Day 2013 International Year of Water Cooperation
On the morning of March 22, in order to celebrate the twenty-first World Water Day, the launching ceremony of the 2013 International Year of Water Cooperation was held at Beijing Jintai Art Museum. The event was co-hosted by UNESCO Beijing Office, UNESCO IHP Chinese National Committee, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN) and Beijing Jintai Art Museum. The event was co-organized by the Beijing Jintai Art Museum-Champion of Water Alliance, Shangri-la Institute, Through Waters, Supporting organizations including Peking University Water Center, Veolia Environmental Services, THIRST and Golden State Environment Group Corporation.
The event started with the poetry “Water” presented by students from Fangcaodi International Century Elementary school. Representatives from different international organizations, corporates, schools joined the force to sign on the signing board, including representatives from China Soong Ching Ling Foundation and All-China Youth Federation.
During “Water Footprint Puzzle” installation, we created a big integrated picture of Jeans, T-Shirt and burger. The big picture consists of 35 small drawing boards, we distribute small boards to 60 students, and put them together after students finish. After the assembling, people could see how much water we consume through the manufacturing and production process. This ‘learning by doing’ experience will inspire and motivate students to be creative and learn the knowledge about water.
During “Wash a with a bucket of water” activity, Dr. Jayakumar, Dr. Liu Heng and Mr.Henry Yuan wash cars with 5 family groups from different schools. This event is also advocates parental engagement to water protection.
During the event, water-related videos presented by different organizations are shown along with the water photography exhibit from Through Waters. Videos cover different forms of water and are produced by UNESCO, Champion of Water Alliance, Through Waters, China Business News, Wild Aid and Thirst.
This event aims to enhance public awareness of the importance of water while strengthening collaboration among organizations, corporates, designers/innovators, NGOs and schools. We believe World Water Day is a good beginning for more following-up activities and projects in each sector.

14 september - 5 october 2012
Italian Cultural Center / Beijing
On September 14, 2012, we held the first exhibition THROUGH WATERS at the Italian Cultural Center in Beijing.
Global security in the coming years is likely to be affected a "water divide" and competition for increasingly scarce resources could mean domestic and international conflicts.
Through this conference, which counts among its participants Ma Jun, UNESCO Beijing, Thirst4Water and anthropologist and curator of the THROUGH WATERS exhibition Christina Sassayannis, we emphasize the importance of creating a dialogue between different academic disciplines and strategies for defining the valorisation (valuation) of water as a key element to be protected and known.
Through this photo exhibition, we aim at highlighting the need for a renewed dialogue among the world's peoples and cultures, especially among young people. The exhibition included the involvement of local and international schools, screenings of the documentaries The Well, water voices from Ethiopia (Esplorare la Metropoli) and CRY SEA (Luca Cusani/Cafi Muhamud) throughout the weeks of the exhibition and the cartoon H2Ooooh! by Gruppo Alcuni in collaboration with UNESCO and Rai Fiction.
Water will be perceived not only for its practical purposes, but as a fundamental element that has always allowed people to travel and interact with other cultures, as a way to approach the "other" with curiosity and affection.
